students to reflect on their memory strategies and identify areas for
improvement.
Activities:
Activity Name
"Memory Mastery for Interpreters"
Connectivism Principle
Building Knowledge through Connections
Connectivism emphasizes the importance of building knowledge
through connections and networks, suggesting that effective memory retention
relies on understanding how information relates to existing knowledge and
experiences.
Objective
To enhance EFL majors' memory and retention skills for
consecutive interpreting, enabling them to effectively recall and reproduce
information while reducing anxiety related to memory recall during
interpretation tasks.
Pre-Task Activity
Activity: "Memory Assessment
and Strategy Exploration"
1.
Self-Assessment: Students complete a self-assessment to identify their
current memory strengths and weaknesses in relation to interpreting tasks.
2.
Research
on Memory Techniques: Students explore various memory
techniques, such as mnemonic devices, chunking, and visualization, and share
findings via WhatsApp.
3.
Discussion: Facilitate an initial discussion in a Voice Thread about
personal experiences with memory challenges and successful strategies.
Connection
Tools:
- WhatsApp: For sharing memory techniques, articles, and personal
experiences related to memory retention.
- Vocaro: To record practice sessions where students implement
memory techniques, enabling them to reflect on their effectiveness.
- Voice
Thread: For collaborative discussions
on memory strategies, allowing students to share insights and provide
feedback on each other's approaches.
Production
Activity: "Memory Enhancement
Exercises"
1.
Mnemonic
Devices Practice: Students create and share mnemonic
devices for key terminology and concepts relevant to interpreting.
2.
Chunking
Exercises: Practice breaking down complex
information into smaller, manageable chunks for easier recall.
3.
Visualization
Techniques: Encourage students to create
visual representations of information, such as mind maps, to enhance memory
retention.
4.
Memory
Recall Drills: Conduct exercises where students
listen to short speeches and then recall and summarize key points from memory.
5.
Peer
Teaching: Students teach each other a memory
technique they find effective, reinforcing their understanding and application
of the technique.
Activity 2: Number & Detail Recall
Challenge
Objective:
To strengthen short-term memory and enhance recall of specific data,
such as numbers, names, dates, and figures often used in interpreting.
Instructions:
1.
Play a short audio or video (30–45 seconds)
that includes specific numbers, dates, names, and facts.
2.
Students listen once without taking notes
and then must recall the details.
3.
Replay once if needed and allow brief
note-taking.
4.
Students retell or interpret the segment using
as many details as possible.
Tools:
- Stopwatch/timer
- Fact-dense audio or video recordings
- Worksheet for memory tracking

- Online Stopwatch Tool
Activity 2: Story Chain Recall Game
Objective:
To enhance working memory by training students to listen, retain, and
build on a developing story—simulating real-time interpreting situations.
Instructions:
1.
Begin a short story (3–4 sentences). The next
student repeats it and adds 2 new sentences.
2.
Each student continues the chain, repeating
everything said before and adding a new portion.
3.
The goal is to accurately recall and build
without skipping or distorting previous content.
4.
Variations: Add conditions such as using
connectors or thematic vocabulary.
Tools:
- Timer
- Recorder (optional for playback)
- Word banks for vocabulary expansion
Links:

topics)
- Wheel of Random Topics for Storytelling
- Recording Tool: Vocaroo
Activity 3: Visualization-Based Recall (Mental
Movie Technique)
Objective:
To train interpreters to use mental imagery and visual association to
retain speech segments during interpretation.
Instructions:
1.
Play a descriptive audio or narrative (30–60
seconds) with vivid actions and scenes.
2.
Ask students to close their eyes and
visualize what they heard.
3.
Then, they either draw a visual map of what
they imagined or describe the “mental movie” aloud before interpreting it.
4.
Discuss how visualization helped retain the
content and sequence.
Tools:
- Descriptive story/audio (e.g., travel,
nature, narrative scenes)
- Paper and colored pens (for visual mapping)
- Audio replay option
